A Quiet Evening
elodious

"What's wrong," he asked,
 1
and she gazed, passive
 2
past
 3
the foot of the bed,
 4
considered
 5
whether to tell him
 6
how she felt, wondered
 7
whether it was worth
 8
the extra tension, whether
 9
it would pile up
 10
against the door
 11
like snow,
 12
pinning them inside.
 13

The rain poured down
 14
like complaints, the storm
 15
downgraded
 16
from a hurricane
 17
to a nagging
 18
wife.
 19

She thought
 20
about concessions
 21
she'd made, things
 22
she'd left
 23
unsaid
 24
to keep the peace,
 25
and sighed, sadness
 26
eating
 27
at the corners
 28
of her eyes.
 29

"Nothing," she replied,
 30
"Let's read."
 31
She picked up
 32
a magazine
 33
and read aloud
 34
in a voice
 35
that was sure
 36
and confident
 37
but never speaks
 38
out of turn.
