Family Scrutiny
larrylark

Son waits for mother
 1
at cafe or street corner bar.
 2
“One small Martini
 3
and a whiskey......large.”
 4

Unfurls photo,
 5
girl met at college.
 6
Edgy, seeking signs,
 7
approval sought.
 8
Heart shrinks,
 9
nervous cough,
 10
neck louvred into
 11
confining collar.
 12

“Wretched girl. Tart.”
 13
her thoughts unsaid.
 14
Lips tighten,
 15
eyes scrutinize,
 16
undermine. ever dry
 17

She looks in his face, finds all
 18
she does not wish to see..
 19
Ex-husband’s features from which
 20
she’s still not free.
