night thoughts

Tonight is so quiet, quiet
The children are sleeping, being
They are whole, they are unbroken
And they are safe, dreaming
Tonight my mind is unthinking
It is whispering, undoing
It’s rubber bands flicking, stinging
It makes no apologies, it lives in amorality
Tonight I am quiet, subtle
My actions are hurtful, disloyal
There is no value in this ageing body
My mind thinks that it is ok to destroy me
When the babies awake they must see me
A solid foundation, concrete, granite
But they must know their mother is chalk
And they must be careful where they walk
