limpets and cuticles

watch the tide, love
cat’s paws and seals
out to the headland
the slump and the fault
floods upon floods
glossopteris and tears
the soft clay yields
to the knife, to the touch
a million years a metre
fresh with annelids and reason
cut to the quick
four years deep

and the rain never started and the wind fought the sea and the cliffs slowly crumbled and your smile is all I remember
(and the limpets)
