The Switch

Isn’t it funny how things change?
Once, as kids
We closed our eyes at affection
As if watching it was wrong, repulsive, inappropriate.
Then we went to the movies as teenagers
Watched romantic comedies
Heard the three words
And wished that it was us.
We longed for affection
Daydreaming kept us out of the classroom
And up at night.
Somewhere along the way
Things changed
A switch was flicked.
Or maybe someone told us
That living is better in pairs
